At La Mariola, birding can begin right from your cabin and continue along the riverbank, through productive areas and into secondary forest. Trails connect these environments and can be explored independently or with local accompaniment on scheduled outings.
This proximity lets you make the most of the early morning without traveling elsewhere and return to birding later in the afternoon.
Outings along the San Juan, Bartola, Santa Cruz or Pocosol rivers allow you to explore riverbanks, waterside vegetation and other aquatic landscapes. Each route is arranged in advance according to the selected stay and each visitor’s interests.

The stays include options that combine river travel and hiking in the surroundings of Indio-Maíz. These experiences are organized with local partners, including guides, families and community groups. Plans may be adjusted because of rain, high river levels or other conditions affecting safety or the quality of the experience.

March, April and part of May generally offer drier walking conditions, while the rainy months bring a different rhythm to the forest and rivers. Because weather can vary, outings are adapted to local conditions.

We observe calmly and follow the rhythm of the forest, farm and rivers. When an interesting species appears, we keep our distance and avoid chasing, surrounding or flushing it from cover, or otherwise altering its behavior. We also keep our voices low and do not modify the surroundings to obtain a better view or photograph.
During outings, we protect nests, roosts, feeding sites and display areas. We encourage responsible use of playback: brief sessions at moderate volume, without unnecessary repetition. Bird feeding is managed only at designated points on the farm under La Mariola’s care.
